Featured free online story extract from Rob Hopcott ...

Amelia-Rose stayed just long enough to make sure that he could make the call and then left running in the direction the man with the combat jacket had taken. Fortunately, it was easy enough to follow him because of the trail of blood. He started by going up the hill in the direction of Ralph's caravan but then cut away into the undergrowth. It was nearly completely dark and Amelia-Rose strained her eyes to see where he had gone, his gun in her hands at the ready. Suddenly, there was a huge snarling sound as if the ground had opened up and all the monsters in the earth had roared at the same time. In the middle of the snarls, a man's high-pitched scream quavered in the air, choked, screamed again and then suddenly died. The snarls continued as the animals began a feeding frenzy.  Read this online story free here

Unweaving the Web: Deception and Adaptation in Future Urban OperationsUnweaving the Web: Deception and Adaptation in Future Urban Operations

Despite the realization that an urban environment can intensify the effects of deception in military operations, many important research questions remain unanswered, and even unasked. The authors use the well-developed literature on deception in animal biology to begin asking and answering those questions. This was done with the aim of improving the ability of U.S. forces to both conduct friendly deception and counter adversary deception in urban operations of all sorts. Using animal biology and military science as the source materials, the authors undertook to elaborate on existing deception theory and to propose new paths for technological, doctrinal, educational, and experimental development. The study concludes that in urban settings, there is great room for improvement in how U.S. forces do deception, and that it is imperative for them to better counter adversary deception. The study notes that deception methods are a preeminent form of adaptation in both biology and military operations, with the concluding chapter exploring this cross-disciplinary relationship (with a particular focus on counteradaptation as counterdeception).

The Antietam and FredericksburgThe Antietam and Fredericksburg

On September 17, 1862, the single bloodiest day of the Civil War, the Army of the Potomac under George B. McClellan clashed with Lee's invading Army of Northern Virginia at Antietam Creek. General Francis W. Palfrey (1831-1889), then lieutenant colonel of the 20th Massachusetts and later a founding member of the Military Historical Society of Massachusetts, was severely wounded in the savage struggle that forced the Confederates to retreat across the Potomac. The Union victory, though costly and indecisive, was enough for Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. But less than three months later, the Battle of Fredericksburg (where droves of Union soldiers were slaughtered in Ambrose Burnside's vain, reckless attempt to storm the impregnable Confederate positions on Marye's Heights) ended the year with a resounding, grisly defeat. The Antietam and Fredericksburg (1882), part of The Army in the Civil War series, is invaluable for Palfrey's unique eyewitness perspective; his unsparing, provocative appraisals of Generals McClellan, Burnside, Hooker, and others; his careful, detailed description of the Antietam terrain (vastly altered over time); and his incisive analyses of the folly and fighting that determined two of the most pivotal, murderous battles of the Civil War.
